Half-Price Domestic Flights Go on Sale Today — Here’s What You Need to Know

It’s been a whole year now of living with the spicy cough, and though in Australia we’ve been fairly bloody lucky to escape the brunt of it, here at Global Hobo at least, our feet are in desperate need of a scratch. It goes without saying that we’re staunchly opposed to Scott Morrison and his trickle-down economics solution of offering half-price flights to stimulate our struggling tourism industry instead of offering actual financial support, but we are still gonna take advantage of the super tasty airfares.

And today, on the 1st of April, all the half-price fares start to get released.

Where is Global Hobo going?

In winter this year, Global Hobo is running TWO writing workshops in the tropical state of Queensland – one in Cairns (Gimuy), and another on North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah), a short ferry ride from just near the Gold Coast.

If you’re an aspiring writer who’s always dreamed of being a freelancer, then our month-long Freelance and Travel Writing Workshop in Cairns is for you. Alternatively, if you’re more interested in sinking your teeth into investigative long-form features, and want to write an exposé under the guidance of a team of journalists (including New Matilda editor and Walkley Award winner Chris Graham), you should head to our Investigative Journalism Workshop on Straddie.

We’ve got COVID-friendly cancellation policies in place, so you can lock a spot knowing you’ll get a full refund if we have to cancel a program (but we’ll also reschedule them so that your Queensland dreams do not go down the drain).

How much are flights and when can I travel?

Half-price flight tickets go on sale from today until the end of July, for travel throughout the year until the end of September. Each week, about 46,000 half-price fares will be released, mostly with Virgin, Qantas and Jetstar, so you don’t necessarily need to scramble to book straight away.

How can I apply for a writing workshop?

Check out more info on each program below, or fill out a contact form at the bottom of this page to get an application in!

Age is just a number -- but you've gotta be at least 18.
No pressure - beginners are still welcome to apply.

Global Hobo is run by a team of writers who mostly live and work on Bundjalung land in the Byron Shire. We would like to acknowledge, pay our respects and give thanks to the Arakwal people, the Widjabal people and the Minjungbal people of the Bundjalung nation: the traditional and ongoing custodians of the land. We pay respect to their elders past, present and emerging, and acknowledge that their land was stolen, and never ceded. We also acknowledge that First-Nations people in Australia continue to suffer from colonialism, and that all settlers in Australia continue to benefit from this oppressive system.
