Shanghai: Propaganda Museum
Get There: Basement Building B, 868 Huashan Lu, near Zhenning Lu, Xuhui District
Shanghai’s Propaganda Museum is an interesting and unvarnished way of seeing the influence the government had on the Chinese population throughout the 1900s, WWI, WWII and the Cold War. You can see artwork and illustrations that feature the government siding with the African-American population during the Apartheid struggle, and Stalin and Mao romantically holding hands to represent friendship between countries. This is a must-see if you love history, because nearly all of the propaganda posters were actually burned and destroyed, meaning the museum holds some of the only remaining artifacts.
