Cape Town: Long Street
Long Street is Cape Town’s version of Khao San Road, the place to be if you’re a 20-something who wants to sweat it out on the dance floor with hipsters and the occasional group of underage girls. If you’re looking for some banging hip-hop, check out Fiction about halfway down the road, or if you’re more of a trance person, Evol is the place to go. (On a side note, drugs are readily accessible: the local car guards often sell speed, or for those who are slightly wealthier than the average broke student, MDMA and E can often be sourced in the club bathrooms – just try to avoid the vomit.)
When the munchies kick-in or your buzz wears off, head to the 24-hour Steers for the best slup chips (aka hot chips) around. Alternatively, if you’re feeling brave, check out Food Inn India for some of the hottest curry you’ll ever eat, or a traditional Durban-style bunny chow. Your stomach probably won’t thank you the next day, and you may need to become better acquainted with your toilet, but that little burning sensation is totally worth the taste explosion and lekker jol that is Long Street.
