Kauai: Kayak the Wailua River
If you’re looking to so something to counteract days spent lying on Ke’e beach, drinking Kona beers and shovelling shave ice and fish tacos into your mouth there’s a few reasons why kayaking to Secret Falls with Kayak Wailua is your best bet. Firstly, as you smart little hobos might have guessed, the kayak ends in a secret waterfall meaning you’re likely to have the place all to yourself. Secondly, the kayaks are tandem so if you regret your decision to rediscover your arm muscles you can always let your mate/partner/random stranger do all the hard work for you. And thirdly, the tour goes for four to five hours, so you still have the whole afternoon to return to the above.
The trip takes off pretty quickly without having to go through too much bullshit safety stuff. You take off across from Trey Parker’s house and kayak 2 miles up the river before a short hike to a cascading waterfall. Unlike other tours, these guys won’t charge you extra for a soggy sandwich, so you can pack your own lunch. Be sure to ask your guide any local questions you may have like where to eat, the best cliff jumping spots and rope swings because these guys know everything there is to know about this island.
