Hong Kong: Tai O Fishing Village
Get There: Catch the MTR line to Tung Chung Station, then New Lantau bus 11 to Tai O
Looking to take things slow while in Hong Kong? Then make your way out to Tai O Fishing village on Lantau Island. If you can avoid the irresistible allure of Mickey Mouse and not catch the connecting train to DisneyLand, enjoy the bus ride with some scenic views (or via Ngong Ping and the Big Buddha) and you’ll be rewarded with a quaint little village that will feel like a completely different world to the urban frenzy you’ve come from.
You can catch a boat and try to strike gold spotting the rare pink dolphins, or try the local cheap street cuisine (high in seafood, but the egg waffles are a staple for the budding tourist foodie). The highlight is the stilt houses, a series of connected houses that sit above the tidal mud flats. Try not to fear for your life as the old wooden pathways creak and groan under your weight (and avoid hitting your head on the low hanging everything that wasn’t designed for western tourists). Bring your camera and pretend you know what you’re doing, because the rustic aesthetic is at an all time high, and every angle provides a new focal point.
