It’s a bold title, but the name doesn’t lie: Montgomery’s really does offer superior hostel accommodation. Equipped for every budget and style, rooms range from 6, 8 and 12-bed dorms through to ensuite family rooms. The whole building is impeccably clean, and even the many shared bathrooms between the rooms remain in pristine condition. The superior ensuite room – complete with complimentary toiletries, tea and coffee – rivals any hotel and is absolutely worth paying extra if you’re after a bit of luxury.
Located about 100m from Franklin Wharf and an eight-minute walk from Salamanca Place, Montgomery’s is in the perfect spot to explore Hobart on foot, which is probably the way to go since there isn’t free parking in the city. Food-wise, there are numerous pubs, cafes, restaurants and supermarkets scattered along the neighbouring streets, or you can make use of the hostel’s immaculate kitchen. The hostel also has a comfy lounge complete with a wide screen TV, although there is so much to do around the place that it’s a bit of a waste to just hang around inside.
On the whole, Hobart comes across as a chilled-out and welcoming city, and being greeted by Kirsten or Will at the front desk is a pretty great way to kick off your stay. Aside from being genuinely friendly and more than willing to help out, they are both finely attuned to the needs of backpackers and have excellent local knowledge. Ditch the guidebook; Will kindly mapped out a self-guided walking tour around the city which paid particular attention to the free sights, best coffee and (obviously) the local bakery.
Comfortable, clean and friendly, Montgomery’s combines the benefits and price of a backpackers’ with the luxury of a hotel, and to be honest there’s really no need to look elsewhere. Montgomery’s is definitely up there in the top five hostels I’ve stayed at – I’m already planning on heading back next time I’m in Hobart.
