The Glenelg Beach Hostel is just like the rest of Adelaide: relatively inexpensive, yet unexpectedly nice. The heritage building dates back to 1878, and the dorms have maintained the period style – which includes bunk-free rooms. Housekeeping ensures the whole building continues to look the part; even as you stagger in after an obligatory Barossa Valley tasting tour, you could be forgiven for convincing yourself you possess an element of class.
Reception is thoughtfully located at the basement bar, and with pints for $7, there is no reason to look elsewhere. For breakfast, munch on some free toast and enjoy tea and coffee around the clock, plus towels and WiFi are provided free of charge. There is a beer garden out the back, a TV room and heaps of space throughout the building. The atmosphere is chilled and none of the rooms feel cramped.
If it comes to a toss-up between staying in the CBD or lounging by the beach in Glenelg, choose the latter. Ignore the wealth the oozes from the Stamford down the road; the Beach Hostel is decent value for money, and no doubt hosts far more interesting travellers anyway.
Hobo tip: The wooden floorboards do tend to amplify your every move, so spare a thought for your fellow hobos and tread softly if you have an early flight.
