When you’re cold and windswept in the Patagonian city of Puerto Varas, stepping through the doors of Margouya to see an open fire is the emotional equivalent of drinking hot chocolate/tea/coffee/soup when you desperately need to warm your soul. One of the Patrimonial/old-colonial houses of the city converted into a hostel, Margouya has the homey feel needed when all you want to do is rest your feet yet still maintins the I’m-having-a-cultural-experience vibe by keeping in style with the historical architecture of the city. Almost all the activities surrounding Puerto Varas involve walking (hike a volcano, trek to some waterfalls, wander around an old German settlement that has excellent cake) and Margouya is what you will want to come home to when you’re physically exhausted. Felipe, the French dueño, says there’s even more physical activity to keep you occupied in summer: kayaking, white water rafting, canyoning, mountaineering, horse back riding, bicycle trips…
This hostel also doubles as a language school. Fans of work-away should keep their eyes on this: students come to the house for lessons in the evening whilst you spend your days circling a picturesque lake of activities. For a hostel designed to be a home away from home, Margouya 2 is exactly what you need when all you want to do is out your feet up and enjoy a class of Chilean red.
