A lot of places claim to be a home away from home, but few nail it better than The Pickled Frog Backpackers. In fact, I don’t even think they try to make this claim, which makes their hominess all the more authentic. I chose this hostel for the same reason most travellers to Hobart would: it has the cheapest beds in the city and does a bunch of free bus rides to Mona and Mt Wellington each week. But the perks didn’t stop there. Their cosy bar boasts the cheapest booze in town, with $2 beers and $9 bottles – that’s BOTTLES – of wine. The enormous common room contains a number of squashy couches crowded around a fire and television, with a bunch of books, board games and movies to keep everyone entertained whenever the Tasmanian weather is too shit to go outside (aka most of the time). Anyone can waltz in to this common room until 9pm, and a short survey I conducted of people snoozing on the sofas during the day revealed that only half of them were paying guests. The showers are toasty, the kitchen is sick and has a massive “free food” shelf, the internet is strong and the staff are all legends who will even go as far as to lend you camping gear (tents, pots, sleeping bags, mattresses and the like) if you want to bail for a few days and do a road trip. Hands down one of the best hostels I’ve ever crashed at.
