This is one of the funkiest hostels I’ve ever stayed in. It’s just like a cozy house with a veggie garden, dorms and private rooms, lounge chairs everywhere, a huge kitchen, colourful shaggy carpet, bike rental, parking out front and, for those world-conscious hippies, a sustainable drain and electricity system.
Hawthorn as an area is pretty fab. Although it’s on the other side of the city centre, it’s the hipster part of town, and biking is huge in Portland so hire one of those bad boys, strap on a helmet and explore. It’s very bohemian with buskers and trendy stores and cafes: a mix of hipster meets hippie, with old bookstores, tarot card readings and New York-style delis.
The houses on the streets all look like their right out of the movie Jumanji – covered in vines with big, wide patios, and buskers play sweet tunes on street corners come dusk.
