Hostal Antigua is a great option if you’re headed to Antigua and just wanting to relax and take in the sights of this beautiful colonial town. It’s super central – only a few blocks from the main park – which means most attractions are within walking distance, including the supermarket which is really handy considering they have a very well-equipped kitchen for if you’re trying to save some coin and want to eat in. The WiFi here is amazing for Central American standards, and even seems to reach some rooms (or perhaps I just got lucky). But while the hostel offers great facilities, it does lack one main draw card: it does not have a bar, which means meeting people here can be a little bit harder without liquid confidence, and it lacks a great atmosphere, which can be so detrimental to a hostel. That being said, the reception staff are amazingly helpful and upon check in will point you in the direction of all important things in the area, including good nightlife. They also run shuttles to various cities within Central America at a decent price and can help you with day trips, such as to Pacaya Volcano. There’s a terrace upstairs which had beautiful views of surrounding volcanos and they also provide free water so you can spend your extra money on the real essential beverage – gallo!
