Livingstone: Victoria Falls Bungy Jump
Cost: Starting from about $80 for the zipline, about $160 to do all three (zipline, swing and bungee)
Get There: You can get to the bridge from the Zambian and Zimbabwean sides of the falls, but you have to go through a customs-y kind of check to get there. Local guys will insist that you need their help to get there, but just go into the office and ask for a temporary pass to do the bungee.
Imagine hurling yourself off a bridge over 100 metres in the air and soaring out over the Zambezi River, then plummeting into a cascading, flurrying fairytale world of mist and rainbows, only to bounce back up through the glorious chaos again. Now imagine all of that with towels around your ankles, your shirt around your ears and an audience of 50 Japanese tourists, and you have Vic Falls Bungee. Not only is the view jaw-dropping (a fact probably accentuated by the niggling fear that it’ll be the last one you ever see), but if you’ve never bungee jumped, you can’t comprehend how liberating, how fucking free those few seconds are, and it’s totally worth the money to find out. Plus, provided you can avoid popping your now unreasonably inflated ego on one of the plague of self-righteous cocks telling you did the 200m+ one in South Africa – (“it’s like, even bigger man…”) – you’ve now scored yourself bragging rights at the seedy end of hostel nights for the rest of your trip/life. For the deals you get it’s well worth it to do the whole package of a zipline (flying fox kind of thing across the gorge) and a swing (basically a freefall, but the right way up this time).
