Free hostel breakfasts are usually so bland and stingy that I never bother waking up in time to eat them. But USA Hostel Hollywood has DIY pancakes. Yep, that’s right: hot, creamy pots of batter bubble on the kitchen stove all morning, and all you have to do is plop a ladle into a waiting pan. They’re delicious, and would easily be enough reason to consider living at the USA Hostel on a long-term basis if it wasn’t for the fact that Hollywood sucks. Best of all, the kitchen is open 24 hours, meaning you and your drunk ass can come in at any freaky hour and cook up whatever is left on the “free food” shelf. In addition to this, the place is modern and spotless, the lounge is wild and open til 2am, there are vending machines with $1 beers, free wifi and a bunch of genuinely sick activities on offer, ranging from limousine rides to stand-up comedy. And seeing as you bundle all your linen up in a ball and shove them in a bin before you even reach reception to check out, towel return is optional. The hostel is super close to Hollywood Boulevard too, so within walking distance of Marilyn Monroe’s hand imprints, Chuck Norris’ Walk-of-Fame star and some of the shadiest homeless people in LA. Five stars.
