Český Krumlov: Depressed Bears
Animal lovers beware! Spotting the bears in Český Krumlov’s Old Town will have you reaching for your razorblade. This truly depressing but evidently historic sight can be found at the moat within the Český Krumlov Castle. Back in the day (since 1707, to be precise) the bears were employed as full time guard dogs to the Czech royals, hanging out in the moat and presumably heckling any attempting trespassers. Today however, the two cuddly red bears laze around snacking on enormous piles of rotting fruit and pose for the hordes of tourist paparazzi. To find them, go to the Budějovická Gate. Go past the post office and before you enter the next gate into the castle itself you will notice a bridge with a moat underneath it; it’s here you will find the bears. The moat is so deep, it almost feels like you are looking down on them while playing a game of I’m the King of the Castle and you’re the Dirty Rascal. When you’re finished feeling sorry for the poor little fellas, be sure to check out the rest of the castle – it’s actually rather splendid!
