On an abandoned lot in the concrete jungle that surrounds Mitte’s Kotbusser Tor station is a wonderland that opens its tiki gates to the public when the sun sinks low in the sky. A chilled-out beer garden that could double as the modern set of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Republik Frank und Frei is an appeasing cross between a Chinese courtyard, a Mediterranean villa and a homely bonfire. Oriental lanterns and fairy lights hang from trees, a firepit crackles invitingly and the pebbled ground is dotted with countless seating options: squashy couches, deckchairs, hammocks and even a red double-decker bus. A selection of traditional German snacks, hot and cold beverages and alcoholic drinks are on offer, and as the waiter will enthusiastically inform you, all wine and beer comes from the acclaimed district of Franconia. Most punters tend to come in with the intention of having a quick drink and a cosy chat, but after kicking back under the stars listening to Republik Frank und Frei’s soothing lo-fi music, you will never want to leave.
