Berlin: Roller Disco at SO36
Are you wildly talented on wheels? If not, don’t worry – neither are any of the other guests who frequent this monthly roller-skating disco. Housed inside the legendary Kreuzberg institution SO36, these fun (but slightly dangerous) parties are held on the first or second Friday of each month. They pride themselves on welcoming anyone and everyone – bonus points for obscure piercings and rainbow hair. A rather grimy bar flanks the dance floor, which backs onto a circular track around the DJ pit. Entering this track and indeed skating around it can be a constant life-endangering gamble, and despite having four perfectly balanced wheels and a stopper, you are guaranteed to leave the event looking like you’ve just done a round with Muhammad Ali – make that three rounds if you skate drunk. The venue itself is unfortunately trashy at best, with a dingy interior and a music repertoire barely worth mentioning. Nonetheless, if you are a thrill seeker, SO36’s roller disco is an excellent means of burning off your daily currywurst, as well as an amusing and unconventional way to spend an hour or two. Oh, and unless you want blisters worthy of hospital treatment, don’t forget to bring socks!
