Pisco Elqui: Mistral Pisco Tour
Cost: 6000CLP (12AUD)
Get There: By bus from Vicuña (2000CLP or 4AUD)
In Chile, pisco is more than just a beverage: it is the drink of the nation. Made from fermenting white wine grapes into liquor, pisco is potent, delicious and produced in a very pretty valley two hours from La Serena. Whilst there are many distilleries in the area, and it is more than possible to factory hop, Mistral is the biggest and best Pisco brand in Chile. The seemingly steep entry price covers “tastings” (generous shots) of pisco in different maturity levels, plus a pisco sour upon the culmination of the tour. After four standard drinks in half an hour, it’s impossible not to enjoy the rest of your day in the sunny-320-days-a-year Elqui Valley. The tour is only in Spanish, but it’s extremely likely a bilingual tourist will translate all the fun facts about the distillery if you’re still sober enough to care. Be sure to take advantage of the shop: pisco here is half the price, delicious and super fuerte.
