Montreal: Smoked Meat Sandwiches
Keeping with the theme of unappetizing food re: Poutine, Montreal is also famous for its smoked meat sandwiches. The meat is served in a rye bread sandwich and drowned in mustard. There’s some complex process surrounding how to salt and cure the beef brisket, but I’m pretty sure it’s as hush hush as the Colonel’s 12 secret herbs and spices at KFC. The boys I travelled with talked about it more than the chicks they slept with the previous night, and given that I was one of the chicks, I like to think this was because of how good the food was rather than an indication of how good the sex was. I still wasn’t convinced, however. The sandwiches look like last night’s road kill, and upon being served one I considered turning vegetarian. But don’t be put off by my thoughts alone. The line at Schwartz’s Montreal Hebrew Delicatessen ( 3895 Saint–Laurent Boulevard) went out the door and halfway down the street, which usually indicates a place is pretty damn good!
